Alumni.NET ModeratorCollege campuses are a gathering point for people from all over the world. Here at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College, we are proud that our students, faculty, staff and alumni hail from every state of the union and many international locations. And though our students have left behind their home counties, their home states or even their home countries, it is important to us that they find a home here on our shared campus.
Diversity on our campus brings together people from different races, religions, experiences and socioeconomic backgrounds. For many students, this is the first time they’ve spent much time away from their homes and are able to interact with people who don’t worship the way they do, who view the world in a different way, who have different values.
We believe those little differences between us should be celebrated. Especially in an environment of higher learning, we need to focus on opening our hearts and minds to the vast world outside of our hometowns and embrace the things that make each of us unique.
On this campus, we not only celebrate diversity but our freedoms to express who we are and to speak our minds freely. But on this campus, we will not tolerate hate. We are here as one community intent on making the world better, and in that better world, there is no room for words or actions or images that are racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, anti-immigrant, misogynist or anti-Muslim.
We are committed to fostering an educational environment in which students, faculty and staff from all backgrounds can live, work and learn as freely as possible from the debilitating effects of prejudice, discrimination and marginalization.
The climate in our nation after violent protests in Charlottesville as well as a few incidents that have occurred on campus since the start of the semester make it exceedingly important for us to come together as one campus to say that hate has no place here in Fairmont. Cruel and hateful words have no place on social media. We want every student here on this campus to feel safe and to feel like they are a member of our diverse and beautiful community.
Recent events, in our nation and at home, have reminded us that much work needs to be done to achieve equity and inclusion. We hope everyone will dedicate to change.
We are one campus, and we are committed to stand together against hate and violence. If we stand together, we are strong, and that strength can change the world. #WeAreOneCampus
